Welcome to Sansom & Company
Sansom and Company specialises in British art from 1880 to the present day, and is fast becoming a major publisher in this field.
We are especially strong on Modern British art, including Gaudier-Brzeska, Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer and Slade and Euston Road School artists. We specialise also in the Cornish art colonies at Newlyn, Lamorna and St Ives, having published books on artists such as Lamorna Birch, Elizabeth Forbes, T C Gotch, Harold Harvey and Charles Simpson and, from St Ives, Tom Early, Bryan Pearce and Alfred Wallis. We have also published Laura Newton's ground-breaking study of the Cullercoats art colony on the north-east coast of Britain.
In 2006 we published a detailed study of Stanley Spencer's paintings about the First World War, leading to the magnificent Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere.
The Pre-Raphaelite painter John Brett is featured in a major book on his work in Cornwall, and we also celebrated the 80th birthday of Glyn Morgan, linking with a major retrospective at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.
A book on Evelyn Dunbar marked the centenary of Dunbar’s birth; a unique and authoritative biography, the publication, which accompanied by the first retrospective exhibition of her work, celebrates for the first time the range of her achievement.
We also published the first biography of Jacob Kramer, an important artist difficult to ‘pigeon hole’ in the history of twentieth-century British art.
Our associated company, Art Dictionaries Ltd., publishes art dictionaries and biographical source material on British artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.
We are always pleased to hear from writers with proposals for books on any aspect of British art of the past two centuries. If you have a text or project which you think might be of interest, write to the Editorial Director, Sansom & Company Ltd, 81g Pembroke Road, Bristol BS8 3EA or email .
